Alimta, a medication manufactured by Eli Lilly & Co., which has been used for some time now in the treatment of malignant mesothelioma, has recently been approved as a first-line treatment for lung cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that the drug can be used as a first-line treatment for advanced and metastasized non-small cell lung cancer, according to CNNMoney.com. According to the report, the manufacturer said Alimta was approved previously as a secondary treatment for non-small cell lung cancer, following chemotherapy, as well as a treatment for malignant mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos.

The new approval authorizes Alimta as a treatment for the most common form of lung cancer in combination with a standard chemotherapy drug, cisplatin, the report says.
